Templates The time honored tradition of website design is hard coding a website using HTML (hyper-text markup language) to provide the content, and CSS (cascading style sheets) to provide the formatting and character in the website. The image of the website below is one such example:
This is an example of a hobbiest website for an 8 bit computer from the early 1980's, the TRS-80 Color Computer. Navigation is provided by using SSI (server-side includes) in the left hand menu, making each page in the site a little less tedious to code. 'A little' being the key words. With the advent of CMS (content management systems) like Joomla! and word press, there's still custom coding to be done to get just the right look, it's nowhere near as intensive.
Joomla! is a website CMS (content maganement system. These types of website are highly customizable, with seemingly never ending options. From a web based store front, governemnt agency, all the way to a social media site, the the types of websites able to be created with a CMS like Joomla! are limited only by the developer's imagination, and the client's needs.
The town of Burlington, Maine website is an example of what can be done in a fairly short time frame with a CMS like Joomla! Feel free to click the image to view the website in it's entirety. There are numerous local information pages included on website design, and this type of site only sctratches the surface of what can be done.
WordPress is another CMS, and is more or less the originator of the blogging platform. However, the WordPress platfor has expanded well past the typical 'blog' environment, and like Joomla!, can handle any type of website from a blog to an online storefront.
It's also quite easy to create a very functional social media platform with extensions like BuddyPress, and a large number of developers have created plugins and templates just for this use. Another add-on, that's quite pricey, but may be worth it for a social media site is BuddyBoss.
This is only one example of what can be done with WordPress and BuddyBoss. BBPress is another option, that requires more effort, but can create the same results. For several WordPress sites, we've used Elementor as the site design tool. We highly recommend Elementor to design high quality, professional websites that are easy to maintain and update for clients who wish to maintain their own, yet do not have the skills in HTML, CSS and JS.
When we design a website, Central Maine TekWerx usually looks over template designs with our clients as a first step. While coding in HTML, CSS and JS using a common framework can yeild similar results as a content management system like Joomla! or WordPress, the effort and time rarely returns a favorable return on investment when comapred to a template. While we use many template providers, the three below are our primary go-to sources for the overall presentation and ease of use for the client:
DreamWerx Kitchens & Baths
Floorit Flooring & Renovations is a remodeiling company in Davenport, Florida. Late last year, the owner decided to rebrand as DreamWerx Kitchens & Baths. After taking a good look at their current website, he decided it was time for an upgrade, because the old site did not reflect on the web the work they do on home remodeling jobs.
This website uses a Joomla! template from JoomShaper, and really fits well with the presentation of their craftsmanship. Central Maine TekWerx is stil working with the owner to finalize the website content, however, he was happy enough with the work so far that he wanted to go live so his clients - present and future - could have a much better user experience when making a choice of where to spend their hard earned money.
8-bit CoCo
8-Bit CoCo is a fan site for the retro-computing hobby. The site centers on the TRS-80/Tandy Color Computer and it's clones and cousins.
This site was built on the WordPress framework, and turned into a complete social site using the BuddyPress platform. Registration is simple using an existing Google account or Facebook. The site offers it's users the ability to discuss topics in a timeline or 'wall' similar to Facebook, yet has groups for machine specific discussions. There's also a classified ads section to make it easy for members to buy, sell and trade.

Our Shared Hosting plans are our most cost efficient model. If you're an individual condisering a personal or hobby interest site, one of these plans may be right for you. Shared Hosting is a service where, to reduce costs, your webspace resides on a server with other websites, and share an IP address.
The results are a slightly slower domain response and load time when compared to out business class plans. The domain namespace is what directs all website queries to the correct folder for your site. Personal or hobby sites, or small businesses that do not need a dedicated high performance website server, may benefit from the cost savings when compared to other plans.
